About MUU Nutrition - cattle feed
Purpose
This app helps cattle owners build a feeding ration from the feeds they already have on the farm. It works out a mix that matches the nutritional needs of the animals. The calculations follow equations published by the NRC (National Research Council) for dairy and beef cattle.
Main Functions
The app is divided into four sections. Each one covers a different type of herd and a different production goal.
The dairy section is meant for milking cows of breeds such as Holstein and Jersey. Milk yield depends heavily on what a cow eats. The app picks a combination of feeds that suits her requirements and her level of production. These formulas come from the NRC Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle, Seventh Revised Edition, Update 2001.
The beef herd section deals with breeding cows and bulls of breeds such as Angus, Hereford and Brahman. These are the animals that produce calves for meat. The ration is set up to cover the needs of both the cow and the breeding bull. It is based on the NRC Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle, Seventh Revised Edition, Update 2000.
The growing herd section is for young cattle that are still developing. It works whatever their future role may be. A heifer may later join a dairy or breeding herd. A young bull may become a breeding sire or move on to fattening.
The feedlot section is for steers and calves being fattened for meat. It relies on the same growth equations used for the growing herd.
Everyday Use
The user works with the feeds available on their own farm. The app then suggests how these feeds can be combined. This can make planning easier when feed stocks or animal groups change.
Who It Suits
It suits dairy farmers, beef producers, feedlot operators and students of animal nutrition. The results work best as a guide. Major ration changes are worth checking with a livestock nutritionist or veterinarian.

A Simple Path for First Time Users
- Choose the section that matches your animals. Pick dairy, beef herd, growing herd or feedlot.
- Think about the goal for that group. Milk output, breeding condition and weight gain each need a different ration.
- List the feeds you actually have, such as forages, grains and supplements.
- Let the app work out the combination and review the suggested amounts.
- Adjust the plan whenever your herd or your feed supply changes.
Terms You Will Come Across
- Ration
- The total daily mix of feed given to an animal.
- NRC
- The National Research Council in the United States, which publishes nutrient requirement standards for livestock.
- Feedlot
- A system where cattle are kept in pens and fed to gain weight before market.
- Growing herd
- Young cattle that have been weaned but are not yet mature.
What to Expect
The app gives a calculated starting point rather than a fixed rule. Feed quality varies from farm to farm, so real results can differ from the numbers on screen. Watching body condition and milk output over time helps confirm whether a ration is working.
